Hail, Luau’s, and Sleigh Bells

Today turned out to be a little more epic than anticipated. Honestly I didn’t anticipate anything out of this day. All I knew was that I was opening the coffee shop with the two best openers, going to a luau, and then a goodbye party. Isn’t it funny how the Lord always has better plans?

I opened Starbucks with only four and a half hours of sleep under my apron, knowing full well it was going to be the BEST morning ever. I opened with a couple’a’monkeys, how could it not be the best morning ever! And it was. Everything went as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Weird comparison, but it works. Once I left, I headed over to Kohl’s to hopefully find jeans. Oh boy, do I need a decent pair of’em! Instead, I ended up with a really comfy green shirt and a silver ring. Productive? Yes. Finding jeans for me, the way I want them to feel, is terribly frustrating. I will find them and I will be the face of determination. Anyways…

After falling asleep on mother’s bed and playing pony with Cleo, (yes she rode around on my back) I finished a rough draft to the most rediculous writing assignment. I was going to a luau with one of my best friends so I got dressed, prettied up my face the best way I knew how, and put a bow in my hair for good measure. What girl doesn’t look cute with a bow in her hair?! *crack*

uhh…

errm….”Great.” Said I. It was a nice and loud clap of thunder that so graced me with irritation knowing I would have to drive in a not so fun rain storm. I had no clue what was awaiting me or my poor little barely surviving nissan. I turned onto the road I enjoy driving most with a little knot in my gut saying, “take the frontage road.” Did not listen. Nope, not one bit. I saw a line on the road in front of me as the rain started to come down at a nice drizzle. *crack* Ok, I can handle thunder and lightning (loads of it). Then I saw a few icey rocks, lovingly called hail, hit my windshield and I hear the most awful smack and it did not let up. That line was the wall of rain and hail. Oh goody! I pulled over to the right praying that I was on dirt and not some ditch that was actually flooded and I was floating down a river. After a few minutes I decided to brave it and try to turn around hoping I would somehow be on the correct side of the road. When I saw red lights in front of me I knew I was safe. Whew! Now I have to conquer Ina to the freeway. Awesome. Didn’t make it all the way down Ina, so I pulled into a Starbucks and waited. I waited some more and became very indignant against the storm that was pelting the streets and flooding sidewalks. I pulled out and prayed my way to the frontage road. 40mph on the frontage road I felt victorious. And alive.

Now that brings us to my friends house to carpool to this supposed awesome luau party. Nice drive, rain here and there, but not much. We arrive at the house and it’s pouring. We sit and debate whether to turn back and get some umbrella’s, or just play it out by ear. We turned back and got umbrella’s. Thank you Lord that we were not struck by lightening while walking around with those things. We find our way through the place and meet a man. Now, neither of us had ever seen him before, and he appeared to be drunk. He hurried us to get our food and come sit at his table. We go to his table, plate of food in one hand, umbrella in the other; at this point becoming very wet. “Let me hold your umbrella!” Said the drunk man to my companion. A look of uncertainty was plain to see, but how do you say no to a kind gesture given by a drunk man? Hmm…

Needless to say he was nice, did not smell nice, but was nice nonetheless. We were about finished and he was about finished telling us about his “wild boy” days, and a son he was done raising. His son is 18. Yeah. It was then announced the show is canceled and to keep your tickets for a free show next time. My friend and I exchange a few words and a look that says, “I’m completely ok with ditching this place, the rain, the drunk man, and if we don’t come back that’s ok too.” It was an experience we will probably never forget. I don’t regret going though. I mentioned that it was coffee shop weather and asked if we should go get some hot cocoa. We drove to Raging Sage and drank the best cocoa! In my opinion at least. And consumed some delish carrot cake, and some coconut cake that was toasted. Mmm! It was still raining outside and lightning flashed all around. It was perfect. We drove back to the house while listening to “Siriusly Sinatra” perhaps one of the best Sirius XM radio stations out there. Home sweet home, I departed and headed to a farewell party.

I get to the house and walk in to see a room full of some of my favorite people dancing to some of my favorite music. And duh! Of course I joined! It became one huge dance party. I rushed over to my friend to ask if he had the band Sleigh Bells to which he replied, “Dude, I wish!” and then downloaded the whole album. Then the dance party REALLY started. I won’t tell you how I danced or what moves I smoothly executed, because I don’t dance smoothly. I dance like….I’ll get back to you on that one actually. It didn’t top the “decades” party where me and my other best friend dressed up in toga’s, but it was close.

More people showed up and it was just one huge funfest. I met some new people, and a very nice girl loaned me her hair tie because my hair is at that annoying stage where it is just long enough to make my neck hot. What, you thought girls don’t get hot or sweat when they dance? Psh. We invented it. We had incredible salsa and football shaped pretzels. Jokes were tossed around, and I shamelessly made fun of my friends beard. But he threw it right back at me and it was hilarious.

I sat and looked around the room totally amazed at the people I know, the ones the Lord led into my life, or He brought me to them. I have not had a Saturday so fun and adventurous in such a long time. The Lord knew I needed today to turn out perfect and it was perfect. I couldn’t have ask for a better day.

I’ll leave you with a bible verse that was written in tattoo form on my friends back. “Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28
